GENERAL KALA Described as “Berlin meets Visage”, General Kala takes inspiration from the classic analogue synth acts of the late 1970s and early ’80s, alongside progressive and rock innovators from both eras. Their immersive, emotionally charged, melody-driven songwriting explores the complexities of human behaviour, driven by syncopated rhythms from drummer Mathiassen (Shapeshifter, Kora). Formed in Wellington in 2013, General Kala played their debut live show two years later, already armed with a 90-minute set of original synthesiser-driven material. The original lineup - Cusiel (vocals, synths), Spence (synths, vocals), and Mathiassen (drums) remains unchanged in 2026. Over the past year, the band has performed at venues throughout New Zealand, steadily building a loyal and growing fan base, with upcoming shows in Auckland, Taupō, and Wellington. General Kala remains entirely self-managed, handling every aspect of the project in-house, from writing, recording, and production to design, video content, and promotion. At the core of the band is a commitment to authenticity and genuine creativity: no auto-tune, no quantisation, no AI - just real music. Last May, the band released six EPs through Pulse Science Recordings, with their latest release, *Blind Alley, 27 May 2026. Showcasing their signature sonic landscape of lush analogue synths, soaring vocal melodies, and pummelling beats, the release delivers both emotional depth and dancefloor energy. A further five EPs are scheduled for release later this year. “I love these songs. Like a cross between Ultravox and Lady GaGa” - Gary Curtis -The Mockers
